Field Trip with Ella

Yesterday was Ella's school field trip to the Ogden Nature Center. Neither of us had been there so I thought it would be fun to be a parent chaperone and go with her. It was a great place! Walking in, there were tons of extremely creative birdhouses made out of anything and everything you could think of. We had a hard time keeping the kids moving because they wanted to stop and talk about all of them!

Before we went outside to explore, Susan, our guide (who was super wonderful!), talked to the kids about plants and animals and their part in the enviornment. They were able to touch some animal skulls and feel snake skin that had been shed. Ick!

One of their outside activities to try and pretend like they were hiding from a predator. Ella dropped right to the ground, even in the prickly bushes. I couldn't see her until she popped her head up. Some of the kids couldn't resist the urge to keep bobbing their heads up to see if the predator had spotted them.

After hiding, they had a bug lesson and were given a jar and net to go in search of their own bugs. Ella and her friend, Cheyenne, found a grashopper. When Ella tried to put him in the cup, she got his leg caught between the top of the cup and lid and started to panic. Once we got him safely inside, she proudly showed him to Susan and the other kids. And then released him back to his home. I love that Ella can be a girly girl some days and then run in the bushes and catch bugs on other days!
